Whether its exposure in your nearest 7-11, ever so common beer runs, or the even most familiar, your parents alcohol cabinets. Point is… access is just too easy.
So what about this generation gap that makes teens so prone to alcohol abuse? Yeah, sure you got the media exposure, peer pressure, and the parents that just aren’t aware. But wait, What about the easy accesses, which they could get their hands on an alcohol beverage? Think about it, how easy can it be? Right?
There’s Internet access, V.I.P access and yes it’s even easy to get access to alcohol. Teens now days must do anything so that they could get their hands on a 40oz of beer or take a shot of hard liquor, but what are the odds that their parents or guardians let them? My guess… Very little.
Granted that being a teen isn’t so easy, with all the peer pressure school pressure and the pressure of just being a teen. However everything comes with a cost. In my case, it may cost a life. By the end of high school, four out of five teens have consumed alcohol, and 62% of teens get drunk at least once before graduating. In 2005, about 10.8 million teens ages 12-20 reported to drink alcohol. Nearly 7.2 million were binge drinkers, and 2.3 million were heavy drinkers, All underage and some with a serious problem. Alcohol is the most popular drug of choice among teens. In fact, youth typically take their first sips of alcohol before leaving junior high. Here in the US the legal age for buying and consuming alcohol is 21, yet teens report having easy access to alcohol.
Easy meaning -not hard or difficult; requiring no great labor or effort. And access meaning -to make contact with or gain access to; be able to reach, approach, enter, etc. Gives teens the opportunity to have alcohol in their possession very easy. Teens get alcohol from a number of sources. There are trips made, often late at night, to obtain beer or other alcoholic beverages or also known as a “beer run”. Having someone of age buying alcohol for minors and its even as simple as your home refrigerator or alcohol cabinet that makes it so easy for teens to lay their hands on alcohol.
Each new generation gets smarter and smarter on how to sneak their way by consuming alcohol. By that, it would get easier and easier for them to do so. Even though there are things such as surveillance cameras, locks for cabinets and an I.D to show that you’re of age. The point is… access is jus to easy.
